The national security adviser, Jake Sullivanmade the comments in a speech at the annual meeting of the National Gun Control Association in Washingtonwhile describing the administration’s attempt to Joe Biden to face what he described as cracks “substantial” and “deep” in the post-war nuclear landscape Cold War.

With the latest arms control treaty between United States and RussiaNew START, nearing expiration in 2026, Sullivan said USA he is eager to forge a new treaty.

Meanwhile, however, Washington wants the world’s two major nuclear powers to adhere to the core of the treaty: a limit for both of 1,550 warheads.

“We are willing to stick to the core limits as long as Russia do the same”said Sullivan.

He also asked Moscow initiate new talks for a post-2026 framework. He added: “Instead of waiting to resolve all our bilateral differences, USA is willing to involve Russia now to manage the nuclear risks.

Unlike the Cold Warwhen there were only two world nuclear powersthe future of gun control will revolve around the arsenal and global presence of Chinarapidly expanding, said Sullivan.

“By 2035, (China) is on track to have up to 1,500 nuclear warheads, one of the largest peacetime nuclear developments in history.”said Sullivanwhich means that USA will have to dissuade two nuclear powers close for the first time in their history”.

“We are also ready to commit to China without preconditions”said.

a high american official told reporters that the factor China not only implies the need for Washington deal with the threat directly, but also consider the ripple effects created for the nuclear allies of United States, Great Britain and Francewhose own smaller arsenals are largely aimed at countering Russia.

Agreements with China “Of course they will affect our ability to reach some kind of agreement with the Russians,” said the official.
