VIDEO. Taiwan: Chinese ship ‘dangerously’ cuts off US destroyer

The Pentagon expressed concern about China’s “increasingly risky” moves in Asia. On Saturday, the US Navy accused a Chinese vessel of “dangerously” zigzagging around a US destroyer in the Taiwan Strait less than 10 days after a mid-air incident between two countries in the region.

The Chinese corps “performed dangerous maneuvers near the American destroyer Chung-Hun, which was sailing in the strait on Saturday,” the US command said in a statement.

The Chinese vessel “passed Chung-Hun port side and crossed its bow by 150m. The Chung-Hun maintained its course and reduced its speed to 10 knots to avoid a collision,” the statement said.

Then he “passed for the second time in front of the nose of the Chung-Hun from starboard to port at a distance of 2000 meters” and continued to swim next to the American destroyer, which he approached to 150 meters, the text adds.

The incident occurred when USS Chung-Hoon, an Aegis destroyer of the US Pacific Fleet, was sailing alongside the Canadian ship HMCS Montreal in the 180km-wide Taiwan Strait that separates the self-governing island of the same name from the mainland. China.

The Chinese military said they monitored the passage of the two ships, but did not mention any incidents.

“The respective countries deliberately create problems in the Taiwan Strait, deliberately foment risks, and maliciously undermine regional peace and stability,” said Colonel Shi Yi, spokesman for China’s Eastern Command.

American ships cross the Taiwan Strait regularly, but they rarely escort it escorted by an Allied ship. The last joint US-Canadian crossing dates from September.

These crossings irritate China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory and claims sovereign rights to the strait.
