Petro referred, without citing him, to the former presidential candidate Federico “Fico” Gutierrezwho this Monday requested his resignation and filed before the Accusations Commission of the House of Representatives a lawsuit for crimes related to illegal campaign financing.

In the message, the president added: “This is a simple coup attempt to stop the fight against impunity”.

In the publication, Petro added a screenshot of a Benedetti tweet in which the former ambassador, whose support was decisive in helping him win last year’s elections, assures that the audios released on Sunday by Semana magazine were recorded at a time of personal crisis.

I have been a fundamental part of the current political project of President Petro. However, not satisfied with what corresponded to me politically, in an act of weakness and sadness I let myself be carried away by rage and drinking (alcohol).”, he expressed.

In the audios sent to Laura Sarabianow former chief of staff for Petro, with whom he is in conflict over the distribution of bureaucratic charges, Benedetti threatened to reveal details of the financing of the presidential campaign, for which he said that he obtained 15,000 million pesos (about 3.5 million dollars ), which would cause a political earthquake in the country.

We all sink, we all finish, we go to jail”, Benedetti threatened.

Last night, in his first response to the audios, Petro said on Twitter that in his government “nor have blackmail been accepted regarding public offices or contracts, nor have money been received in the campaign from people linked to drug trafficking, much less have figures such as 15,000 million pesos been handled outside our accounting”.
