Moscow rarely reports casualties among its troops. But on Tuesday, the Russian army acknowledged the deaths of 71 of its soldiers in operations to repel Ukrainian attacks across the front over the past three days. According to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, about 210 servicemen were also wounded. He also reported damage to 15 tanks and nine armored personnel carriers, as well as two vehicles and nine artillery pieces.
According to him, since Sunday, Ukraine has deployed “a large amount of equipment and forces” to different sectors of the front and suffered losses in these attacks. “The offensive attempts were thwarted (…) the enemy did not achieve his goals, suffered significant losses,” he added.
On Monday, Russia already said it had repulsed large-scale Ukrainian attacks, implying that it could be a massive counter-offensive that Kiev had been preparing for months. Ukraine, for its part, downplayed the scale of the fighting, but on Monday announced territorial gains near the devastated city of Bakhmut, the epicenter of the fighting.
Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other of destroying the dam
Sergei Shoigu also accused Ukrainian forces of being responsible for the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam in southern Ukraine, which led to the flooding of surrounding areas.
According to the Russian minister, this “sabotage” is aimed at “preventing the offensive actions of the Russian army on this sector of the front,” while, according to him, Kiev is transferring troops from this sector to strengthen its strike potential. in the other place.
Ukraine, for its part, accused Moscow of being responsible for the destruction of the dam, which is located on the territory under Russian occupation, on the border between the positions of the two camps.
