Alert for activity of Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico is reduced

The alert level of the Popocatepetl volcanoin the center of Mexicowas reduced this Tuesday after its activity decreased after the intense explosions it registered in May, the authorities reported.

The alert was lowered to yellow phase 2, after it was raised to yellow phase 3 on May 22, prior to the highly dangerous red alert, reported the government National Center for Disaster Prevention (dinnerpred).

The activity has presented a slight decrease in some of the parameters (…) with some emissions of low ash content and the expulsion of incandescent fragments in smaller volumeassociated with some low to moderate amplitude tremor episodes, as well as sporadic minor explosions”, the institution detailed in a statement.

Also “the frequency and intensity of exhalations has decreased and the number of recorded volcanotectonic earthquakeshe added.

The colossus, 5,452 meters high, recorded explosions mild to moderate, with emission of fragments around the crater and a large amount of ash on the night of May 19.

A day later, the activity forced the suspension of operations for a few hours at the two airports that serve Mexico City and in the state of Puebla.

The authorities they also conditioned hostels in case it was necessary to evacuate thousands of people who live in towns near the mountain.

Some 25 million people live within a radius of 100 km around the volcanowhich entered into activity in 1994 after almost seven decades of quietude.

The ashes have reached Mexico Cityalthough in a much smaller quantity than in 1997, when in a matter of days they accumulated 400 tons only in the central sector of the megacity.
