The senator Mexican Manuel Velasco announced this Wednesday that he is separating from his legislative functions in Congress to dedicate himself fully to his activities as a candidate for the Presidency of Mexico.
“I present (…) my license to separate myself from the position of Senator of the Republic that with a lot of emotion, work and commitment to Mexico I have served throughout the Sixty-fourth and Fifth Legislatures”, he notified.

The senator will compete in the next elections of 2024 for the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) which is part of the ruling coalition, which leads the National Regeneration Movement (Brunette).
In his letter sent to the Mexican Congress, Velasco stated that he will leave his stage as a legislator to “meet a new challenge“and one of his greatest aspirations”with a lot of responsibility, with a view to citizenship and love for Mexico”.
He also thanked his parliamentary caucus of the PVEMin which he served as coordinator and assured that he maintains his commitment as “member of these historic Legislatures of the Union Congress”.
“It was and will be a factor of unity, harmony and encounter between brothers and Mexicans. For a united Homeland and the transformation of our country”, he stated.
His retirement from the Mexican Congress comes hand in hand with the resignation of Marcelo Ebrard as chancellor of the Mexican Government, to also contend as a candidate for the ruling coalition Together we will make history and that gave electoral victory to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in 2018.
The national president of Morena, Mario Delgadoreported Tuesday at a press conference that next Sunday the party will define the process it will follow to choose its party’s candidate for the 2024 elections, in which the successor to the current Mexican president will be chosen.
Among the guidelines expected by the aspirants is the possibility that the candidates for the Presidency who want to be championed by the ruling coalition withdraw from their positions, in order to promote an even floor.
