Petro: “In May 2025, the decades-long war between the ELN and the State will definitively cease”

Colombian President, Gustavo Petroassured this Friday, during the closing of the third round of talks between the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the Government, that peace between both parties could be achieved in May 2025.

“In May 2025 the decades-long war between THE N and the state”, alleged the president, who presided over the closing of this cycle of negotiations that took place during 35 days in Havana and where a cessation was signed bilateral fire of a national nature that will be progressively implemented but will begin officially on August 3.

The two parties set a calendar that stipulates May 2025 as the limit to have signed the first three points of six of the final agreement -participation, democracy and transformations-, which would allow Petro end his mandate with peace with the last great Latin American guerrilla.

“By May 2025, the agreements on the first three points of the peace agenda must be signed, which gives us the prospect of seeing peace signed with the ELN before the end of that year,” explained to the media the senator ivan cepedawhich is part of the government delegation.

Said peace agenda is the one agreed upon in the previous cycle of dialogues held in Mexicoin the call “Mexico Agreement” and contemplates six points: participation of society in peace, democracy for peace, transformations for peacevictims, end of the armed conflict and execution of the agreements.

Although the commitment is for the first three points, the other three will be able to be worked on in the next rounds in parallel, as they assured from the government delegation.

CEASEFIRE

Petrowho decided at the last minute to travel to Cuba to participate in this important ceasefire announcement despite the crisis in which his government is immersed, he stressed that it is a “partial agreement”, but that is the way so that in 2025 Colombia long live the end of another conflicteither.

This ceasefire contemplates a first phase of enlistment, until July 6, in which the order will be given to stop the offensives and which will become official on August 3 for 180 days, that is, that Colombia would enjoy the cessation of confrontations between the State and the THE N during the remainder of the year.

This is the longest ceasefire agreed to to date by the Government of Colombia and the ELNwhich have not finally managed to explicitly include a cessation of hostilities such as kidnapping or the recruitment of minors.

“The world of weapons and killing each other for decades (…) must stop. The violence we live through generationsof which we have been part but have tried to overcome, tells us that we have not been able to build ourselves as a nation ”, alleged the president during the closing.
