Senegal’s presidential elections postponed: Paris calls for elections ‘as soon as possible’

Hours after Senegalese head of state Macky Sall announced an indefinite postponement of presidential elections, Paris is calling for elections to be held this Sunday “as soon as possible.”

“We call on the authorities to remove the uncertainty surrounding the electoral calendar so that elections can be held as quickly as possible and in accordance with the rules of Senegalese democracy,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The president, elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2019, made the announcement in a brief appearance on public television hours before campaigning began on Sunday at 00:00 (local time and GMT). An unprecedented decision made in the context of a deep political crisis and causing protests. The vote was scheduled for February 25.

The opposition in Senegal is calling for demonstrations this Sunday in Dakar and plans to begin the election campaign as planned.

The announcement once again plunges the country, known as Africa’s island of stability, into uncertainty but has suffered various episodes of deadly unrest since 2021.
