UN: living in a clean environment is a human right

This Friday, the Council of Human rights from HIM-HER-IT passed a resolution that recognizes that living in a environment safe, clean, healthy and sustainable is a human right. The agency explained that without this right it is difficult to enjoy other rights, such as health or even life.

Costa Rica was the main promoter of this initiative, which highlights that the right to a clean and sustainable environment is interconnected with other rights already recognized in international law, that is, they are universally applicable.

During the negotiation, Russia proposed various amendments that sought to weaken the scope of the resolution, according to the countries and NGOs dedicated to this issue and supported the resolution. Those amendments were rejected one by one by vote.
