O European Commission announced today that on Monday it will deliver to the UNRWA 50 million euros next week, out of the 82 million euros budgeted for the agency in 2024, which will increase emergency support to Palestinians by 68 million euros in 2024.

“The EU is a long-standing partner of UNRWA in providing aid to Palestinian refugees in the region. “The full disbursement of the EU contribution is critical to the agency’s ability to maintain its operations in a very volatile area.”said the head of UNRWA.

18 countries announced at the end of January that they would suspend their funds for the UNRWA following Israel’s discovery of an investigation that revealed that 12 members of the organization in the Gaza Strip participated in the October 7 attacks, to which the organization responded by terminating their contracts and opening an investigation.

Among the countries that suspended funds were its main donors, such as USA, Canada, Germany or Japan, depriving the agency of more than half its budget in the midst of an emergency response to the war in Gaza Strip.

“As the Agency responds to the most devastating conflict in Link is cooperating with an ongoing external review under the leadership of the former French foreign minister Catarina Colonna with three renowned Scandinavian institutes”he indicated Lazzarini.

O HUH It did not suspend the funds, but temporarily froze them pending the conclusions of the internal investigation opened by the UN and today he decided to take them back “after having assessed the situation in light of theThe accusations made by Israel (…) and took into account the measures adopted by the UN”.

In this sense, he welcomed the investigation opened by the Office of Internal Inspection Services of the UN to clarify these serious accusations and praised the fact that the UN created an independent analysis group, led by the former French minister, to assess whether the UNRWA is doing everything it can to ensure neutrality and respond to allegations of serious violations.

The community Executive also reported that the UNRWA agreed to a review of its staff to confirm that it did not participate in the attacks and to further checks, and agreed to an audit of the agency to be carried out by external experts appointed by the EU.

Outside of support for UNRWA, the Commission stated that it will allocate an additional €68 million in 2024 to support the Palestinian population across the region, which will be implemented through international partners such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

Brussels had already allocated 125 million euros of humanitarian help to Palestinians by 2024.
