A 6.9 magnitude earthquake hits the coast of some islands south of Tokyo

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of the Ogasawara group of islands, about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyoat the Pacific Oceanwhere it was felt strongly but did not activate the tsunami warning nor has any resulting damage been recorded so far.

The earthquake occurred at 5:35 pm local time this Saturday (8:35 am GMT) and had its epicenter at a depth of 540 kilometers off the coast of the archipelago of Osagawarasouth of the Japanese capital, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The tremor reached level 3 on the Japanese seismic scale (7 levels and focused on measuring surface shaking and potential damage) in this group of islands.

Japan sit on the call Fire ringone of the most active seismic zones in the world, and suffers earthquakes relatively frequently, which is why its infrastructure is specially designed to resist tremors.
