Gaza War: Israel Claims to Have Killed or Wounded ‘60%’ of Hamas Militants

It is a military “success,” according to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The IDF has “killed or wounded 60 percent” of Hamas militants after nine months of war with the Palestinian Islamist movement in the Gaza Strip. As mediation efforts intensify, “the successes are numerous,” he said Wednesday from the podium of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

The army is currently active in several sectors of the Gaza Strip and has significantly stepped up its offensive in Gaza City in recent days. However, in early January it announced that it had “completed dismantling the military structure” of Hamas in the northern Palestinian territory where the city is located, before launching ground operations in the center and south of the territory. It confirmed that Israeli forces had “disbanded the vast majority” of Hamas battalions and that “the soldiers fought for nine months (…) selflessly, selflessly and successfully.”

Asked by AFP whether “60%” of the Hamas militants had been killed or wounded, the Israeli army said it was “checking” the information. The Defense Ministry did not immediately specify the percentage. “We have returned half of the hostages and are determined to return the rest,” the defense minister added, referring to the fact that 116 of the 251 people kidnapped on October 7 are still being held in the Gaza Strip (42 of whom have died), according to the Israeli army.

CIA and Mossad chiefs expected in Doha

“The entire security apparatus is determined to achieve the war goals” set by Israel, Yoav Gallant said, namely uprooting Hamas and freeing the hostages. After months of fruitless cease-fire talks, a source close to the talks said the heads of the CIA and Israeli intelligence services were expected in Doha on Wednesday.

The fighting was triggered by an unprecedented attack by Hamas in Israel on October 7 that killed 1,195 people on the Israeli side, most of them civilians, according to an Agence France-Presse tally based on official data. According to Hamas’s Health Ministry in the Palestinian territory, Israel’s military retaliation campaign has devastated the Gaza Strip and killed 38,295 people, mostly civilians.
