Since the beginning of his political career, Mark Rutte has accumulated nicknames: “Mr. Flexible”; “Teflon Mark”; “Mr. No”; “The man who whispers in Trump’s ear”… This Wednesday, the list will be expanded with a new title: NATO Secretary General. The former Dutch Prime Minister was hailed by 32 countries of the Organization during the summit dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Alliance. He will take office on October 1, replacing Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg.

“Mark is a true defender of the transatlantic relationship, a strong leader and consensus builder (…) I leave NATO in good hands,” wrote the person concerned at the end of June as head of the Atlantic Alliance. On the same social network, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also praised Mark Rutte’s “leadership” and “expertise”, assets that are “crucial for the Alliance in these difficult times.”
