5.8 magnitude earthquake shakes the Argentine province of Mendoza

An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale shook the province this Wednesday argentina from Mendoza (west, border with Chile), without any victims or material damage being reported so far, official sources reported.

According to him National Institute for Seismic Prevention (Inpres) from the South American country, the earthquake occurred at 00.17 local time (03.17 GMT) and took place at a depth of 122 kilometers.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 7 kilometers north of the town of The caves, very close to the border with Chile, 117 kilometers west of the provincial capital and 203 kilometers southwest of the neighboring province of San Juan.

In fact, in the city of Mendoza The Mercalli scale, which measures the intensity of telluric movements, was located at IV, so the neighbors felt how the objects oscillated in their houses.

The earthquake was also felt in the province of San Juan, with an intensity between III and IV.

The province of Mendoza, through which the Andes mountain range passes, registers strong seismic activity: the previous earthquake in the area occurred on September 29, when an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 shook the region, without causing damage or deathly victims.
