The new lava delta (or “fajana” as it is called in the Canary Islands) is growing especially in width as it continues to receive contributions of lava that continues to fill and make the lava flow that specialists call number 2 grow on the surface, the one that reached the sea on Wednesday.

This is the second time that the lava from the Old Summit it reaches the ocean and forms a lava delta. The first was on September 29, ten days after the eruption began, when stream 1 reached the coast and created a fajana that is now more than 40 hectares in size.

In the last hours, it has been possible to capture underwater images of the new lava delta thanks to underwater robots and underwater cameras. In them you can see different lava formations and signs of life, such as corals or a school of fish.

Meanwhile, seismicity on the island of La Palma -at depths greater than 20 kilometers- has rebounded in recent hours with the record this morning of a magnitude 5 earthquake.

According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN) of Spain, the earthquake, which has been felt in practically the entire island, took place at 3:37 a.m. with its epicenter in the town of Villa de Mazo, 37 kilometers deep, and with an intensity of IV-V (on a maximum of XII).

Since last September, there have been several earthquakes of magnitude 5, and even one of 5.1, the most powerful of those that have occurred on the island since the seismic crisis that preceded the eruption began.

As for air quality, there has been an improvement in the five municipalities in the west of La Palma that had been experiencing problems in recent days.

Regarding the meteorological conditions, the ash cloud that the volcano expels moves to the west and maintains the favorable scenario for the island’s airport to operate.
