Rebound in hospitalizations due to coronavirus in Belgium exceeds “most pessimistic” forecasts

The increase in cases of coronavirus and hospitalizations related to this disease in Belgium It is “superior to the most pessimistic curves” outlined last week by experts, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced on Thursday.

The president will meet this Friday with the heads of the federated entities to decide on new measures.

“The latest data collected show that the epidemiological situation has deteriorated considerably in recent days,” stressed De Croo in a statement.

The authorities discovered the alleged fraud when the Walloon Agency for a Quality Life (Aviq) detected that the same doctor had issued certificates at the same time and in different places.

While waiting for justice to act, the doctor will not be able to issue new certificates, as explained in the regional chain LN24 by the person in charge of Health of Wallonia, Christie Morreale.

Belgium currently has 75.2% of the total population vaccinated with the full schedule, although there are large differences between the northern region of Flanders (80.3%), the southern region of Wallonia (70.1%) and the central region of Brussels (57 %).

The news is known while infections continue to skyrocket in Belgium, which registers a cumulative incidence of 1,547 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, an increase of 64% compared to two weeks ago.

However, and despite the fact that infections move at record levels, this is not the case with hospital admissions or intensive care, and neither in deaths, where the curves are clearly lower than previous waves thanks to the protection offered by vaccines .
