The president of the Czech Republic is hospitalized again, now with coronavirus

President Czech Milos Zeman re-entered a hospital Thursday night after testing positive for COVID-19, just hours after he was discharged after more than a month of treatment for an unspecified illness.

The presidential office said Zeman tested positive after arriving at his official residence in Lány, west of Prague, in the afternoon. His official schedule was postponed, and it was unknown whether Zeman would be able to swear in the new premier as scheduled on Friday, a process that has been long delayed due to his previous hospitalization.

Hours before, he had been released from the military hospital in Prague.

Zeman, 77, was rushed to hospital on October 10, the day after the elections for the lower house of Parliament, and was admitted to an intensive care unit. His health problem was attributed to an unspecified chronic illness.

The hospital said Thursday that it would have preferred Zeman to remain in the clinic, but accepted his decision to leave because he had a “significant improvement” in his health problem.

The president planned to continue his recovery in Lány.

Zeman, a heavy smoker and drinker, suffers from diabetes. You have trouble walking and have been using a wheelchair.

As president he plays a crucial role in establishing a new government after the election. On Friday he was scheduled to swear in Petr Fiala, leader of the coalition that won the elections, as the new prime minister.

The conservative-liberal coalition known as Juntos, made up of the Civic Democratic Party, the Christian Democratic Party and the TOP 09 party, captured the highest number of votes, 27.8%, in the elections.

Together he joined the liberal coalition made up of the Pirate Party and STAN – a group of mayors and independent candidates – which finished in third place, with 15.6% of the vote.

The new coalition, which will hold 108 of the 200 seats in the lower house of parliament, relegates populist prime minister Andrej Babis and his centrist YES movement to the opposition.

The five parties have signed an agreement to govern together. It is unknown at the moment when Zeman will be able to swear in Fiala and his entire government.
