Turkey suspends flights to 5 African countries due to new variant of coronavirus

Turkey has suspended all flights with five African countries to prevent the expansion of the new variant of the coronavirus B.1.1.529 and baptized this Friday by the World Health Organization (WHO) with the Greek letter omicrón, reports this Saturday the Turkish press .

Due to the increase in cases of the new variant of the coronavirus, “entry permission will not be given as of tonight to those who arrive in our country by land, sea, air or rail from Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe” Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca tweeted shortly before midnight local.

  • Australia restricts travelers from 9 African countries by omicron variant
  • Germany registers a first possible case of the new variant Omicron of the coronavirus
  • Netherlands: 61 passengers from South Africa test positive for coronavirus upon arrival in Amsterdam

Turkey will not allow the entry of travelers from these southern African countries, where the mutation was detected earlier this month.

Turkey thus joins the list of countries, including the United States, the European Union and Australia, that have already chosen to suspend travel from southern Africa.

The World Health Organization (WHO), determined this Friday that the new variant of the coronavirus detected in South Africa is “risky” and possibly more contagious.

The variant appears to have an even greater transmission capacity than previous strains, although it is not yet known whether it is more or less resistant to anticovid vaccines.
