The United Kingdom detects two cases of the omicron variant

United Kingdom detected two cases of infection by the new omciron variant of the coronavirus in people “Related to travel to South Africa”the British Department of Health reported on Saturday.

”The United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed that two cases of covid-19 with mutations compatible with [la variante] B.1.1.529 in the United Kingdom ”, the department said in a statement, adding that infected people and their families will be isolated.

“The two cases are related (to each other) and to a trip to southern Africa”the statement stated. The health authorities specified that one of them was detected in the city of Nottingham (center) and the other in Chelmsford (east of London).

For “Cope with the evolution of the situation”, The British government decided to tighten the conditions of entry into its territory for people from Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola as of 0400 GMT on Sunday.

Four countries joining the list of South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini (or Swaziland), Zimbabwe and Botswana, placed on the government’s “red list” on Friday.

All people from those countries will be prohibited from entering the United Kingdom, unless they are British citizens or residents. Those who “have returned from those countries in the last 10 days must isolate themselves and do a PCR test.”

The British government registers one of the most serious death toll in the world from covid-19, more than 140,000 people, and currently registers an increase in cases, with about 1,000 hospitalizations a day.

Although these figures are lower than those recorded at the peak of the pandemic, authorities fear that the health situation will worsen with the arrival of winter.
