A man suspected of having set fire to the giant Christmas tree installed in front of the headquarters of the US television network Fox News was arrested on Wednesday by police in New York.

The 49-year-old man faces a charge for “Criminal fire” after being caught around midnight (0500 GMT) climbing the structure that supported the 15-meter tall tree in front of the chain’s building, in the heart of Manhattan.

The man carried a lighter, although the police have not determined if the detainee used any catalyst to start the fire, of which the firefighters of the Big Apple will have to determine the cause.

The motive for the fire is unknown at the moment. The president of Fox News Media, Suzanne Scott, denounced in a statement the “malicious and criminal” attack, at the same time that he promised to install a new tree as a message “of peace, light and joy.”
