After months of persecution and threats, Roberto applied for asylum in Belgium, but the authorities have denied it in the first instance and he is now awaiting an appeal.

He is one of the thousands of Salvadorans to whom the Belgian government does not recognize the status of asylee.

Until the end of 2019, the vast majority of Salvadoran applicants for international protection were recognized by the authorities of the European country.

But a change in procedures made the situation change drastically and suddenly.
