AMLO recommends that Mexicans meet at Christmas despite the omicron variant of the coronavirus

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, recommended this Wednesday that people meet at Christmas “with precautions” despite the global advancement of the omicron variant of coronavirus, which has led different countries to implement measures to limit encounters between family and friends.

“There is controversy about whether or not we meet for this new variant, that we do it carefully, but that we do try to meet with our loved ones, it is very important to see each other, it is something beautiful to meet”, declared the president in his daily press conference at the National Palace.

Unlike other countries in the world, especially members of the European Union (EU) and some regions of the United States and Brazil, Mexico has chosen not to announce containment measures to prevent the spread of the omicron variant, which has already been detected in 23 cases, according to the Mexican health authorities.

During his morning conference, López Obrador said he was “happy” that people are going out again to do Christmas shopping as in other years, without commenting on possible measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“I am very pleased that these days, since December 12, the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the city is (full), there are complaints about traffic, the center is full, because people are happy”, declared.

Mexico arrives at Christmas with more than 3.93 million infected with covid-19 and almost 300,000 recognized deaths, the fourth highest figure in the world, since the start of the pandemic.

The director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has suggested “canceling or delaying” the Christmas holidays due to the advance of omicron and the prevalence of the delta variant, but the Government of Mexico has ruled out that the recommendation apply for the country.

López Obrador stressed that in “his letter to Santa Claus” he asks that “no one be sad, that everyone be happy.”

“There is no hatred, or if it exists it is minimal, in very few people, the people are happy, the people are happy. Before there was talk of social bad mood, people were angry, well (now) not. And boy did we go through a difficult situation, very difficult with the pandemic, very painful, “he said.
