The dreaded murderer who must have locked underground in a glass box

Robert Maudsley has been in custody in Wakefield Prison, England, for 43 years.

Family abandonment

He was born in 1953 in the British city Liverpool. He is the fourth of 12 siblings, according to information from the newspaper ‘Wales Online’. He did not have a childhood very close to his parents, as he was interned in a orphanage.

However, his parents took him out of there and he returned home at the age of 8, but he experienced the harshness of domestic violence: constant beatings that even led him to lock himself in his room for six months.

In the midst of that environment, Robert entered the world of drugs and, according to the British media ‘Echo’, offered sexual services at the age of 16.

The string of murders

John Farrell he was one of his clients and his first victim. The man showed him the harassment and abuse he had committed to minors and that upset Maudsley, who hit him hard in the face until he was unconscious.

In 1974, he voluntarily surrendered to the authorities and was sent to the Broadmoor Hospital to receive psychological care.

The medical entity seemed to be the best place in order to attend to his mental state, as well as that of other subjects and serial killers, including the British Peter Sutcliffe.

However, by 1977, he committed the second murder. With the help of one of his roommates, he tortured another inmate for nine hours, as reported in the newspaper ‘The Sun’.

The head of the victim was left in a deplorable state. Apparently he had destroyed it using a spoon. According to the aforementioned media, Robert was wrongly accused by a security guard eat the brain of the dead. Hence they dubbed it ‘Hannibal the Cannibal’.

The murder conviction imposed by the judge had him transferred to the Wakefield jail, where he has completed more than 40 years.

His behavior did not wane; it was exacerbated by the murder of two of his new patio companions.

Reports indicate that the man repeatedly strangled and stabbed Salney Darwood with a craft knife that he had made from a soup spoon. That same weapon was used to cause fatal injuries to William Roberts and to open his skull.

The subjects were in jail serving sentences for murdering minors and women.

Sentence to four life sentences

Maudsley, according to ‘Wales Online’, said in his last court hearing that he had also wanted to murder both of his parents. Even part of that behavior was justified by Paul, his older brother.

”I was lucky. I ended up with someone who loved me and showed me affection. But for Bob (Robert), the chain of abuse was never broken. They have abused him all his life, “he commented.

In fact, one of the nuns who cared for him at the orphanage during his early years couldn’t believe he was a murderer.

”I don’t remember him like crazy. In any case, he was one of the boys who behaved the best (…) I had no idea about the problems that the family had at home. It saddens me to know what it is, “he said, speaking with the aforementioned newspaper.

Authorities classified it in 1983 as the ‘most dangerous prisoner in the UK’. He could not have contact with other inmates and so they locked him in a glass box to serve his four life sentences.

Wish to die

“What is the use of having me locked up 23 hours a day? Why bother eating and exercising for an hour a day? Who am I a danger to? Due to my current treatment and confinement, I feel that all I have to wait for is psychological damage, mental illness and probable suicide ”, he wrote in a letter during 2000, which was known to the newspaper ‘The Sun’.

In that letter he asked the prison authorities to allow him to watch television, listen to music or simply give him cyanide to end his life.

Robert only has communication with his niece Claire Maudsley. They exchange letters frequently.
