A 2022 full of challenges: the key dates of the international calendar for this year

Whenever the COVID-19 allow it, this will be a year full of appointments and events of great impact for the future of the planet. Changes of command, summits, referenda, events and other events are on the agenda for the next 365 days that have just begun.

Next, a review of the key dates that will mark the world and national stage.

JANUARY

DAY 1

  • Funeral of South African Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu, icon of the struggle against apartheid.

DAY 2

  • It is 40 years since the start of the Falklands War between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

DAY 6

  • It is a year since the assault on the United States Capitol.

  • Tenth anniversary of the accident of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia.

  • Costa Rica hosts the Forum of Ministers of the Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean.

FEBRUARY

DAY 1

  • The Chinese New Year begins.

DAY 4 – 20

  • Beijing Winter Olympics, China. Countries like the United States and the United Kingdom are leading a “diplomatic boycott” of the event due to human rights violations in the Asian country.

DAY 6

  • Presidential and legislative elections in Costa Rica.
  • It is 70 years since the rise to the British throne of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, after the death of her father, George VI.

DAY 7

  • 30 years have passed since the creation of the European Union.

HALF OF FEBRUARY

  • Belarus submits the draft new Constitution to a referendum, amid a severe crisis of legitimacy for President Alexander Lukashenko.

DAY 25 – MARCH 1

  • The Rio de Janeiro carnival returns after two years of waiting due to the pandemic.

MARCH

DAY 11

  • The leftist Gabriel Boric assumes the presidency of Chile.
  • Two years have passed since the declaration of a COVID-19 pandemic.

DAY 13

  • Legislative elections in Colombia, to which the parties will arrive amid internal divisions.

DAY 21

  • The new Felipe Ángeles airport opens in Mexico.

APRIL

DAY 9

  • It is one year after the death of Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh.

DAY 10

  • Presidential elections in France in which the current president, Emmanuel Macron, would run for a second term. The second round is set for April 24.
  • Consultation for the revocation of the presidential mandate in Mexico promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador himself.

MAYO

DAY 9

  • Presidential elections in the Philippines, in which candidates such as Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of current president Rodrigo Duterte, and former boxer Manny Pacquiao compete.

DAY 13

  • It is 15 years since the disappearance of the girl Madeleine McCann, in Portugal, a mystery still unsolved.

DAY 24

  • Bicentennial of the independence of Ecuador from the rule of Spain.

DAY 29

  • Presidential elections in Colombia to decide who will succeed the right-wing Iván Duque.

JUNE

DAYS 39 AND 30

  • NATO Summit in Madrid, Spain, with the crisis with Russia as a backdrop.

JULY

DAY 1

  • The first same-sex marriages take place in Switzerland.

DAYS 2-6

  • United Nations Oceans Conference in Lisbon, Portugal.

DAY 16

DAY 25

  • Referendum in Tunisia on the constitutional reforms proposed by the citizens.

AUGUST

DAY 31

  • It marks 25 years since the death of Princess Diana of Wales, in a car accident in Paris, France, in 1997.

SEPTEMBER

DAY 7

  • Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil.

DAY 12

  • 30 years have passed since the capture of Abimael Guzmán.

OCTOBER

DAY 2

  • General elections in Brazil. Those called to contest the presidency are the current far-right president Jair Bolsonaro and the leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

  • Parliamentary elections in Latvia.

  • G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia.

NOVEMBER

DAY 8

  • Midterm elections in the United States, which renew part of the Legislature and which will serve as a test to measure the popularity of President Joe Biden.

FROM NOVEMBER 21 TO DECEMBER 18

  • Soccer World Cup in Qatar, already tainted in the previous one by allegations of mistreatment of workers and human rights violations in the rich Arab country.

DECEMBER

DAY 17

  • Early legislative elections in Tunisia.

NO DATE ESTABLISHED

  • Chile will hold an exit plebiscite at the end of the year in which citizens will decide whether or not to ratify the new Constitution.
  • In the second half of the year, Chinese President Xi Jinping will be ratified for a third term as head of his party – and therefore the country – during the XX Congress of the Chinese Communist Party.
