Kim Jong-un visits the mausoleum of his father and grandfather on the occasion of the New Year

The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, visited the mausoleum that houses the embalmed remains of his father and grandfather in what is his first official act of the year, the North Korean state agency reported today.

Kim during the New Year, he visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang where the bodies of his father and grandfather rest, according to the KCNA agency this Sunday.

Accompanied by a large entourage and a wreath, according to the published photograph, Kim paid tribute to his father Kim Jong Il, who recently commemorated the tenth anniversary of his death and his grandfather, the founder of the regime who died in 1994.

He was accompanied on this visit to the Kumsusan palace by other top regime figures such as Choe Ryong-hae and Jo Yong Won, among other members of the leadership bodies of the Workers’ Party and according to the state agency.

The current leader, in command of the country since late 2011, pays tribute to his predecessors every New Year’s Day except 2018.

The leader’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, was also accompanying the delegation that has paid tribute to the statues of the deceased leaders, according to the South Korean agency Yonhap.

The official visit to the mausoleum comes after the closing, on the last day of 2021, of a plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party, which concluded after five days without messages for the US and the South, and which drew a policy to enhance economic development.
