In the last century, María del Carmen Hernández y Espinosa de los Monteros, Duchess of Santoña, wanted to build a children’s hospital located in Madrid, which is now known as Hospital Niño Jesús.

Thanks to the success of the project, which includes a neo-Gothic church, in 1881 the children’s health center was inaugurated. The final product was recognized with various awards at exhibitions in Antwerp (1886), Paris (1886), London (1887), Vienna (1887) and Barcelona (1888). It was also declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

The raffle was maintained and was called “National Child Raffle”: the Duchess of Santoña wanted to commemorate the motivation of the architectural project.

King Alfonso XII, for his part, freed the precursor of the initiative to pay the 4% tax.

“To all those present who saw and understood, know that the courts have decreed and sanctioned the following: Sole article. It is exempted from the 4 percent tax that all raffles must contribute to the Public Treasury, the Hospital for poor children entitled Niño Jesús, ”were the words of Alfonso XII, according to ABC of Spain.

Despite this part of the story of success and altruism, the Duchess ended the last years of her life ruined, penniless, left to her own devices in a pension. An alleged illegitimate daughter of her husband came from Cuba to sue her, claiming her father’s inheritance. This led to her ruin.

The previous most popular version put the origin of the raffle in 1941, after the then general director of Timbre and Monopolios, General F. Roldán requested that 4 series of 42,000 bills be printed.
