United Kingdom exceeds 200,000 coronavirus infections in one day for the first time in the entire pandemic

The United Kingdom registered another 218,724 new infections of coronavirus covid-19, exceeding 200,000 for the first time in the daily part of new cases, and reported another 48 deaths from the disease, according to data released this Tuesday by the British Government.

However, these figures include data corresponding to various dates, since there have been delays throughout the country in updating infections during the past Christmas holidays.

The current number of positives represents an increase of more than 60,000, after having undergone a laboratory test, over the total number of infected by the virus reported yesterday, 157,758.

At the same time, the National Statistics Office (ONS) indicated that in the country as a whole, 174,000 deaths have already been registered in which covid-19 was mentioned in the death certificate.

The British Minister of Health, Sajid Javid, considered today that for now there is nothing in the official data that suggests that “plan B should be abandoned” (of restrictions that includes the mandatory use of masks in some places or the return to teleworking) adopted by the Government to combat the new wave.

Speaking to the media during a visit today to a vaccination center in South London, Javid defended that “plan B has been the appropriate approach, as well as being fully committed to the vaccine program.”

The minister admitted that reaching the 25% of people who have not yet received the booster vaccine could be key in how the country wades through the pandemic.
