Ómicron: US warns that more children will inevitably end up in hospital due to coronavirus

The chief epidemiologist in the White House, Anthony Fauci, affirmed this Wednesday that it is “inevitable” that more children end up in the hospital due to the increase in cases of coronavirus for the expansion of the omicron variant in U.S. “It seems that omicron causes a less serious disease but the acute volume of infections due to its deep contagiousness means that more children will end up infected,” Fauci said at the press conference of the US government response team to the pandemic.

The US president’s medical adviser, Joe Biden, stressed that possibly minors with “other underlying diseases” will be the ones who end up in hospital.

“This is inevitable,” he said.

In that sense, he stressed that the best way to prevent children who are not vaccinated due to their age from getting infected is for people around them to be immunized.

“When they are out, if they are old enough to tolerate a face mask, put a mask on them, especially in places where people congregate.” the expert pointed out.

In U.S, the authorities have authorized the vaccination of minors between 5 and 17 years old.

In addition, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended that the booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine be given to children who are immunosuppressed.

This Wednesday, a CDC scientific committee is evaluating whether to advise that all children between the ages of 12 and 15 receive the booster dose after the FDA gave the green light on Monday.
