“A defeated former president”: the 16 mentions of Trump in Biden’s speech for the assault on the Capitol

Without ever saying the name of Donald Trump, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, dedicated a good part of his speech on the anniversary of the assault on Capitol to condemn the actions of his predecessor, whom he referred to 16 times as “the former president.”

Biden accused Trump of spreading “a web of lies” about the result of the 2020 elections and directed against him one of the adjectives that can hurt the most to the one who was president between 2017 and 2021: that of “defeated.”

These are the 16 times Biden spoke of Trump without citing him by name in his speech on Capitol Hill:

1. What we did not see (on the day of the assault) was a former president who had just incited the mob to attack, sitting in the private dining room outside the Oval Office of the White House, watching everything on television.

2. “A former president of the United States of America has created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 elections. He has done so because he values power above principle. Because he sees his own interest as more important than that of his country. And because his wounded ego matters more to him than our democracy or our Constitution. He cannot accept that he lost ”.

3. “The big lie that the former president, and many Republicans who fear his wrath, has told is that the insurrection in this country actually took place on Election Day (and not the day of the assault on the Capitol).”

4. “Supporters of the former president are trying to rewrite history.”

5. “As the former president lost, instead of looking at the 2020 election results and concluding that they need new ideas or better ideas to win more votes …”.

6. “… the former president and his supporters have decided that the only way to win is by suppressing your votes and subverting our elections. That is wrong. It is undemocratic ”.

7. “The second big lie told by the followers of the former president is that the results of the 2020 elections cannot be trusted.”

8. “All the legal challenges that questioned the results – in all the courts of this country – that could have been made, were made and were rejected, and often rejected by judges appointed by the Republicans, including judges appointed by the former president himself.”

9. “Even before the first vote was cast, the former president was already preemptively sowing doubts about the election results.”

10. “He’s not just a former president …”

11. “… he is a defeated former president, by a margin of more than 7 million of his votes, in full, free and fair elections.”

12. “In each of the cases, where they had to present evidence and submit to oaths to tell the truth, the former president failed to defend his allegations.”

13. “The former president and his followers have never been able to explain why they accept as accurate the other electoral results that took place on November 3, in the elections for governors, senators, and legislators.”

14. “(Those elections took place) on the same ballots, on the same day, cast by the same voters. The only difference? The former president did not lose those elections, he only lost the one in which he competed ”.

15. “The third great lie told by a former president and his supporters is that the mob that sought to impose its will through violence are the true patriots of the nation.”

16. “The former president, who is lying about this election and about the mob that attacked this Capitol, could not be further from core American values.”
