The widow of a former American soldier received a very nice surprise on December 9: a letter dated December 6, 1945 and written by her husband when he was deployed in Germany after the end of the Second World War!
The missive was intended, at the time, for the mother of the soldier, reports a CNN article. The former American soldier, John Gonsalves, was then 22 years old. In his letter, he describes the atmosphere in the city of Bad Orb, he takes news of his family, and above all, he says he will soon return to the United States. “I was able to read it and it was wonderful. It is in very good condition, I can’t believe it,” said Angelina Gonsalves, the widow of the soldier she married in 1953.
Angelina Gonsalves received an unexpected, yet cherished, delivery from the US Postal Service last month — a letter her late husband wrote to his mother while deployed overseas in 1945. https://t.co/HMLjSxeBsk

Hard work of postal services
This little parenthesis of happiness could not have been done without the American postal services. The courier was found at their processing center in Pittsburgh. Seeing the importance of this letter, they conducted a real investigation to deliver it to its destination and search for the soldier’s closest relative.
Although at that time this woman did not yet know her husband, who died in 2015 at the age of 92, receiving such a letter lit up her face. For one of his sons, “it was as if he had returned for the holiday season”.
