A young woman was humiliated in public to cheers from the crowd, mainly women, after she was allegedly gang-raped by several men in New Delhi, India, in what has been described as revenge by the family of a boy who fell in love with the victim and committed suicide when he was not reciprocated. The “unfortunate incident of sexual and physical assault on a woman due to a personal enmity” was reported this Thursday in the capital’s Shahdara district, the area’s Police Inspector, R. Sathiyasundaram, reported in a video statement.

Until now, authorities have arrested four defendants “And the investigation is still ongoing,” he added.

The president of the Women’s Committee of the Indian capital, Swati Maliwal, indicated for her part that the victim is a 20-year-old woman who “was gang-raped by illegal liquor sellers.”

The attackers shaved her head and put black paint on her face, then paraded her in the streets with a garland made of shoes around her neck.

“I am issuing a notice to the Delhi Police. All accused men and women must be arrested and the young woman and her family must be given security.”, posted Maliwal on Twitter.

THE HUMILIATION

Images of part of what happened, widely disseminated on social networks, show a young woman with a shaved head wearing a shoe necklace around her neck while walks surrounded by a crowd, mostly women, between blows, shouts, and shoves.

The custom of hanging garlands, usually made of flowers, is an ancient Indian tradition to honor people or religious figures, but when shoes are worn it expresses the shame of a community towards an individual.

To this practice of contempt can be added the cutting of the hair or tonsure, or painting the person’s face black before dragging him into the crowd to attack him.

At the origin of what happened is supposedly the revenge of the family of a boy who, in love with the victim, committed suicide last November after not being reciprocated.

“His family blames my sister for the death of his son”The young woman’s sister told the Indian Express newspaper.

This new incident evidences the cruelty that persists in Indian society against women, despite attempts by the State to toughen sanctions and laws against sexual assault.

The way in which women are seen in the India and tolerance by a part of society towards these attacks are behind many of these attacks and violations, sometimes described as a cause of “national shame”.

According to the latest official data from the Indian National Crime Records Agency (NCRB), 28,046 rapes were reported in the Asian country in 2020, more than 70 a day.
