Qantas to operate non-stop flights from Australia to London and New York by end of 2025

It’s more than just ordering planes. The airline Qantas has just confirmed that it has validated the purchase from Airbus of twenty A220s, twenty A321XLRs and twelve A350-1000s. These will be used by the Australian company to carry out its “Project Sunrise” by operating the longest commercial flights in the world by the end of 2025.

The Airbuses will allow Qantas to connect Sydney and Melbourne to destinations such as London and New York non-stop for the very first time. In this context, the A350 fleet will be equipped with top-of-the-range cabins.

“New aircraft types make new things possible. That’s what makes today’s announcement so important for the national carrier and for a country like Australia where air travel is crucial. The A350 and Project Sunrise will allow any city to be a single flight away from Australia. This is the final frontier and the final solution to the tyranny of distance,” said Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce.

The company has already carried out test flights for long-haul flights in 2019, including a 17,750 kilometer London-Sydney flight which lasted nineteen hours and 19 minutes.

Singapore Airlines now operates the world’s longest non-stop commercial flight between Singapore and New York, nearly 19 hours on board. This A350 order is therefore supplemented by that of 40 A321 XLR and A220 aircraft and purchase options for 94 other of these aircraft until the end of 2034.
