Dollar closes slightly lower at S/3.98 after BCR intervention

The price of the dollar in Peru closed with a slight decline on Thursday, after the inflation data in the United States that was well above expectations and opened the doors to further tightening of monetary policy by the Federal Reserve (Fed ).

The exchange rate ended at S/3,980 per dollar, a slight drop of 0.025% compared to Wednesday’s close of S/3,981, according to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR).

US consumer prices rose more than expected in September and underlying pressures continued to build, reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve will carry out a fourth interest rate hike of 75 basis points in the month coming.

The consumer price index rose 0.4% last month, after 0.1% in August, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the CPI to rise 0.2%.

In the 12 months to September, inflation rose 8.2%, after rising 8.3% in August. The annual CPI peaked at 9.1% in June, the biggest advance since November 1981.
