Fuel: Prices will stabilize until the refueling discount ends on January 1

Prices per liter of diesel and SP95-E10 are leveling off after a month of almost continuous decline since mid-November. This decline was then attributed to investor concerns about the rise in Covid infections in China and the implications for domestic fuel demand.

According to official data published on Monday, December 26, the cost of a liter of diesel fuel rose slightly last week and reached 1.75 euros per liter, which is 1 cent more than a week ago. Meanwhile, the SP95-E10 remains at 1.62 euros per litre.

Favorable exchange rate

“The price of a barrel of oil has fixed in the region of 80-85 dollars. (from 75 to 80 euros), — comments Philip Shalmin, commodity market specialist. The dollar also slightly weakened against the euro, which also explains this slight drop. After stagnating against the US currency throughout 2022, the euro is correcting to $1.06.

According to the economist, in the coming weeks, the price of fuel should fluctuate around 1.80 euros per liter. However, the difference between the SP95 and the diesel engine may increase from February 5, 2023. Far or more difficult,” Philip Shalmin explains.

End of the discount device on the pump

This stability is reassuring in the days before the end of the fuel discount. Scheduled for January 1, 2023, it will mark the end of the 10 cent discount at a gas station and an additional 10 cent discount at TotalEnergies stations. This system will then be replaced by a €100 fuel surcharge for all of 2023.

According to the Ministry of Economy, this assistance will affect the most modest 10 million workers whose basic tax income is less than 15,768 euros per year, and will amount to 10 centimes per liter during the year for a person who has traveled 12,000 km. Its attribution is not automatic: procedures will be open from the beginning of next year on the website impots.gouv.fr.
