Basse Rein: rejuvenation of the largest castle in France

This is a major renovation that started in Gambsheim (Lower Rhine) in December. The most important castle in France is undergoing a major renovation to celebrate its 50th anniversary. “The doors of the structure will be dismantled to remove asbestos, as will the airlock, which is undergoing mechanical repairs,” explains Vincent Speisser, Deputy Head of Operations at Voies navigables de France in Bas-Rhin (VNF 67). .

Commercial river navigation, with sixty boats a day, is the most important in the country. “It was necessary to modernize this work in order to perpetuate the activities of this important node of the Rhine. This river is the second largest basin after the Seine, with an annual volume of 10.8 million tons, so our lock must meet these requirements,” continues Vincent Speisser.

Project worth 36 million euros

This work is also a response to a government request. “Barges are an environmentally friendly mode of transport and allow the transport of large convoys. Some boats can carry bulky cargo equivalent to 200 heavy vehicles,” says the manager.

This project will last almost four years at a cost of 36 million euros. “These are delicate operations as the structure must be cleaned upstream and downstream. As a result, when one of the two parts of the lock is repaired, the other will have to support all river traffic,” concludes Vincent Spiisser.
