Hours of tension have been experienced in Peru in recent days, especially in the southern part of the country, where protests against the government of President Dina Boluarte continued this week.

On Monday, January 9, 17 people died in clashes between protesters and police in the vicinity of the airport in the city of Juliaca, in Puno. According to medical sources in the region, most of the deceased had serious injuries from firearms and pellets.

The following day, Tuesday the 10th, it was confirmed that a police officer was burned to death after his patrol car was attacked by unknown persons in Juliaca. The unit, occupied by two agents, was carrying out patrol work when it was attacked, surrounded and set on fire by presumed protesters. A police officer was seriously injured in the head and other parts of the body.

His partner, Second Class Petty Officer José Luis Soncco Quispe, did not have the same fate and his charred body was found next to his service unit.

In this regard, the head of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola, told Congress -during the request for a vote of confidence- that the two policemen were attacked “at close range” by the protesters.

“Yesterday (Monday 9) at 11:45 p.m., in the vicinity of the San Martín school in the Colmena urbanization in Juliaca, a group of protesters detained the mobile unit of the PNP emergency unit (…) made up of a crew of 2 non-commissioned officers, who were brutally attacked by the protesters”, indicated the premier.

He added that the Police arrived at the scene and verified that one policeman was beaten and handcuffed and the other, second-class junior José Luis Soncco Quispe, has died, has been burned alive in his patrol car, “he added.

In this sense, the premier “deplored” the aggression against the forces of order and called “for order, peace and tranquility for all Peruvians.”
