Trains, schools, traffic jams… the failures of this strike on Thursday, sector by sector

Mobilization continues. The social movement against pension reform is organizing its twelfth day of interprofessional mobilization on Thursday in response to the union’s call for a withdrawal of the text. Demonstrations that interfere, the Constitutional Council must within 24 hours make its decision on the conformity or non-compliance of this reform.

The Parisian procession should depart from the Place de l’Opéra and end at Place de la Bastille early in the day. On Friday at the end of the day, a rally is also planned, possibly in the square in front of the town hall, in connection with the announcement of the decision of the elders. Demonstrations near the Constitutional Council will be prohibited all day on Friday by decree of the prefecture at the request of Gérald Darmanin.

As in previous days of the action, interruptions are expected in some areas. The Parisian sums up.

In transports

Metro and RER traffic in the Île-de-France region is “almost normal”. Only on the 8th and 13th metro lines are there minor interruptions. The traffic of trams and buses is normal “throughout the network”.

SNCF, for its part, provides “normal or near normal” service on RER B, but only three-quarters of the trains or slightly less on other RER lines. In detail: Schedule an average of 3 out of 4 trains on RER A, 1 out of 2 on RER D and 2 out of 3 on RER C and E.

At the national level, it is necessary to make 3 TER out of 5, 4 TGV out of 5, only 1 daytime Intercity out of 5 and none at night. On the other hand, “Eurostar and Thalys traffic is almost normal,” the railway company emphasizes.

Mobilizations are sometimes organized at stations, such as at Narbonne (Aude), where the station is occupied by railway workers, or at Quimper (Finistère), where about twenty demonstrators marched along the tracks to block train traffic. In Rennes (Île-et-Villain), the metropolitan bus depot is blocked, buses do not run.

In the air

In the sky, cancellations of about 20% of flights have been requested from airlines by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) at the airports of Nantes, Bordeaux and Toulouse. The airports of Ile-de-France Orly and Roissy, the busiest in France, are not affected by the consequences of the involvement of air traffic controllers.

Garbage removal

After a three-week strike in March, the Paris garbage collectors have yet to say their last word. A new social movement is expected this Thursday: the CGT filed an indefinite strike notice effective April 13, and the garbage collectors of the city of Paris voted this Wednesday for a “second act” of the strike.

The new general secretary of the CGT, Sophie Binet, was on Thursday morning in front of the waste incinerator in Ivry-sur-Seine (Val-de-Marne) with trade unionists. She, in particular, assured that this is “definitely not the last day of mobilization.”

Roads

The blockade continues around several cities in the west, notably Caen (Calvados), Brest (Finistère) and Guingamp (Cote d’Armor). In Rennes, filter dams have been installed at some exits from the ring road, in particular at the gates of Beaulieu and Brécigny.

Access to the A4 motorway was temporarily blocked in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) when the roundabout was busy for several hours in the morning in Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle). Traffic remains disrupted.

In Savoy, opponents of the reform carried out a “free passage” operation in Chambéry, France Bleu Pays de Savoie emphasizes. Some thirty demonstrators “raised barriers and distributed leaflets calling for demonstrations.”

Schools

The two majority unions in primary and secondary education, respectively, Snuipp-FSU and Snes-FSU, have called for a strike and demonstration this Thursday in accordance with an inter-union decision. The unions broadcast several mobilizations in various processions on social media.

They also call for “assemblies on April 14” in connection with the decision of the Constitutional Council.

While data on mobilization by trade unions has not yet been reported, the Ministry of Public Education, for its part, reports 4.66% of teachers on strike. Specifically, this is 4.13% of teachers in elementary schools, 5.81% in colleges, 4.99% in general and technical high schools, and 3% in vocational high schools.

Several high schools and universities are also blocked throughout France, such as Helene-Boucher’s high school in Paris or science city in Lille.

refinery

Refineries are encouraged to mobilize at the national level as part of this 12th day of action. This Thursday morning, the entrance to the Feyzin refinery near Lyon was blocked for two hours by a hundred trade unionists.

According to the prefecture, the police intervened to disperse them without major incident.
