Happyvore opens its vegetable meat factory in the Loire

“It’s very good, it has a lot of flavor! With a smile on his lips, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire traveled to Chevilly, in the Loire, on Wednesday to open the very first factory of the Happyvore group, a young growth created in 2019 specializing in meat alternatives based on vegetable proteins.

After cutting the ribbon, the minister enjoyed tasting sausages, dumplings and meatballs made from peas, wheat or soy, which are then flavored and given a meat-like texture. “I’m a huge supporter of animal husbandry and I love a good steak, but that doesn’t preclude diversity in your diet! It is this balance that needs to be found,” he commented.

This plant was installed on the former industrial site of the Labeyrie group, closed for several years. Happyvore took advantage of the restoration plan to refurbish it and invested more than 35 million euros in the work. “We broke everything from floor to ceiling,” says one of the two co-founders, Guillaume Dubois.

This industrial plant, with a production capacity of 10,000 tons per year, has been in operation since February. Currently, the plant employs 40 people. It plans to hire 20 more people by the summer, and when it is fully operational, it will be able to accommodate 100 employees.

But “this is just the beginning,” predicts Cedric Meston, another Happyvore co-founder. The company, which sells its products in supermarkets and restaurants, intends to take advantage of the fast-growing market, which in this niche is growing at 10-15% per year. “We have the ambition to become the French leader in plant-based meat alternatives,” the leaders assure.
