According to the OCU, Spaniards plan to spend 20% less than other years during these holidays, although, even so, the average cost per person exceeds 500 euros

There is nothing and less for the Christmas and waiting to know what can be done and with whom due to the pandemic of coronavirusWhat seems like there will be a good meal to celebrate them. The Christmas it is a time when you tend to spend more. Families make a significant outlay buying the most typical foods from the Christmas menus.

In fact, one of the complaints that always accompanies these dates is that these products precisely raise their price just before the holidays. But Is it true that prices go up before Christmas? How much can a family save by advancing their purchases? How much do you have to anticipate? Are prices increasing in a staggered manner? The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has tried to answer these questions through the usual study of “price observatory” with the most common fresh products of these days, seasonal products that are only found at Christmas or products of higher quality and higher prices, which are reserved for special celebrations. And this 2020, despite the special circumstances of the pandemicIt seems that it will not be an exception.

The OCU has selected 15 products very typical of Christmas dates, as well as others that could also be good substitutes and the result is that yes, there are prices that go up. The OCU Christmas Price Observatory has collected prices in supermarkets, hypermarkets, department stores and municipal markets in 6 Spanish cities: Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia Y Zaragoza, and the result is the following: angulas, the in money and the round veal are the foods that have increased their prices the most in the face of Christmas, marked this year by the health crisis of the Covid-19, while sea bass, Iberian bait ham and sea bream are the ones that have lowered their prices the most, according to the OCU price observatory.

Specifically, elvers are the product that has risen the most, 38%, up to 906 euros the kilo as of November 26, followed by poularde (+ 30%) and round veal (+ 12%), while on the other side are sea bass (-21%), Iberian ham bait (-13%) and bream (-12%). In general, meats, with some exceptions, are the products that rise the most, while fruits and vegetables are kept, Y fish and shellfish are the ones that decrease the most with the exception of elvers and oysters.

Thus, clams are currently 6% cheaper than last year, while the Galician barnacles now cost 3% less than on the same dates in 2019. prawns they have also dropped in price this year, by 11%, and sea bream is currently 12% cheaper. Instead, according to the OCU, hake, oysters Y angulas they are now more expensive.

According to the data from the first control of the three planned by the OCU, prices have increased moderately, 1.1% on average, compared to 2019, although with variations between different products. However, in the full series, from 2015 to now, the Christmas basket is more than 30% more expensive now than in that year, while in the same period the CPI has risen much less.

In total, of the 15 products OCU tracks, seven have raised the price within a few days of Christmas: angulas (+38%), in money (+30%), round veal (+12%), oysters (+9%), hake (+2%), cordero lechal (+ 2%) and Lombard (+ 1%), compared to eight that have dropped: lubina (-21%), Iberian bait ham (-13%), besugo (-12%), prawns (-11%), clams (-6%), Turkey (-6%), piña (-6%) and Galician barnacles (-3%).

Regarding the first intake made in previous years, the OCU has verified this year a certain containment, since the increases are concentrated in a few products, while in the rest it could be said that prices are maintained or slightly decreased.

According to the OCU, Spaniards plan to spend 20% less than other years during these holidays, although, even so, the average cost per person exceeds 500 euros. Gifts, meals and celebrations take the largest items of expense.

The second OCU price control will take place when there are barely two weeks left for the Christmas and the third and last one on the eve of the holidays.savings and consumption
