Italy: Sicily’s main airport closed until Wednesday due to fire

Catania Airport in Sicily will be closed until noon Wednesday due to a fire that broke out on the night from Sunday to Monday, after which firefighters took it under control. “Flights are suspended until Wednesday, July 19, 2:00 pm,” the airport said in a statement.

According to media reports, the fire, which did not result in casualties, started shortly before midnight and was not brought under control until dawn. All passengers present were evacuated by security personnel after thick smoke filled much of this international airport.

This fire occurs when Italy, like Spain, suffers from extreme heat. A red alert has been declared in 16 cities across the country, forecasting 36/37°C. But the mercury column should reach 40°C on Monday and 42°C on Tuesday in Rome, where it could be even hotter than in Palermo, in the very south of the country (38°C), according to the Italian Air army meteorological website. .

According to media reports, the two-day delay before the airport reopens should allow the damage caused by the fire to be repaired and the building, still stinking with smoke, to be ventilated.
