Electricity: Enedis sees no risk of shortages this winter

This winter, the French will no longer have to limit their electricity consumption. Invited to Radio Classique this morning, Marianne Legno, president of the board of Enedis, reassured me. “I believe that this year we can be very confident in the conditions for the passage of winter, that is, in the balance between what is produced and consumed by the French, since the forecasts for the production of electricity, both nuclear and hydraulic, are good, at a better level than last year. »

Last year, individuals, companies and municipalities were asked to reduce their electricity consumption in the face of the risk of supply shortages and therefore cutbacks. For example, cities and villages have reduced public lighting consumption by 20%.

At the same time, the French seem to have retained good sobriety reflexes. “We estimate this at Enedis: Consumption is down 9% on average compared to previous years.” The “effort” continued in companies and individuals. “Changes in the mentality are coming,” she rejoices.

Combined Effects

Choice really wanted or suffered? Electricity prices have risen 10% since August 1, after already jumping 15% in February.

“This sobriety has the effect of changing behavior, combating climate change, the desire to do more and more without fossil fuels … And then there is a discreet effect that was difficult to measure due to rising energy prices,” admits Marianne Legno.

However, the Enedis chief defends the “very competitive” cost of electricity in France compared to its European neighbors, and even “affordable”, in part thanks to the “protection systems put in place”.
