Good news for motorists. Oil group TotalEnergies, which operates a third of petrol stations in France, announced on Tuesday it would increase petrol and diesel prices at its 3,400 stations to 1.99 euros per liter next year.
In February 2023, it was announced that “the €1.99/liter cap will be extended beyond the end of 2023 as long as prices remain high,” the group said in a press release, while the government, which brings together fuel distributors in Tuesday morning called for “solidarity efforts.”
In early September, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire formally asked Total CEO Patrick Pouyanné to extend the price cap at the pump “beyond December 31.”

Because in some places fuel prices have returned to crazy prices. At the end of August, prices for diesel fuel (1.85 euros per liter) and gasoline (1.92 euros per liter) increased again. According to a comparator on the government website, the €2 per liter barrier has been broken in many locations in major cities.
“The only major French oil company we have left is Total. This should be the property of not only the French nation as a whole, but also of all motorists,” the minister explained.
