Vosges: electric bikes Mustache Bikes moves frame production

The reason was the health crisis in 2020. “During the first lockdown, we were frustrated because we were reliant on our suppliers in Asia at a time when the demand for bikes was exponential,” explains Greg Sang, co-founder of Mustache Bikes, a brand based in Thaon-les-Vosges (Vosges). ). It was necessary to work around this. »

For three years, the brand has focused on repatriating the creation of one of the main parts of a two-wheeler: the frame, usually made entirely in Taiwan. “We wanted it to be open, without a bar in the middle, to be more comfortable and to keep you from lifting your leg when you sit,” says Greg Sang.

The production cost is 20-30% more expensive.

Mustache Bikes is collaborating with a foundry in Vitrolles (Bouches-du-Rhône) to produce new aluminum frames. “Forty years have passed since frames were no longer produced on an industrial basis in France. Ours consists of only two elements, without any welding. Therefore, assembly becomes easier,” emphasizes the manager. Despite the fact that the production cost is 20-30% more expensive than other frames, “this is not a hindrance for us, because this approach makes common sense,” he assures.

The new electric model from Mustache Bikes with this all-French frame retails for €5,999. Twenty of the 150 employees are dedicated to research and development, “to always be one step ahead, even if we don’t have a bike entirely made in France.” There are still many parts that come from overseas, such as suspension and transmission. It is important to promote the idea of short circuiting to as many of them as possible,” concludes Greg Sand.
