2024 Olympic Games in Paris: decree on the possibility of suspending weekly rest

Less rest due to the Games: The government published this Friday in the Official Journal a decree allowing the suspension of weekly rest in companies involved in broadcasting or organizing the Olympic Games for a period of almost one month this summer.

This exemption is granted to “undertakings experiencing an extraordinary increase in the volume of work required to record, broadcast, broadcast and re-broadcast competitions organized as part of the 2024 Olympic Games, as well as to support activities related to the organization of events and the operation of facilities associated with the organization and holding of the Olympic Games.” games,” the decree states.

The exemption is valid from July 18 to August 14, the Games will be held from July 26 to August 11.

The decree specifies that compensatory rest “at least equal to the duration of the conditional rest shall be granted to the concerned employees immediately after the period referred to in Article 1.”

The article of the law providing for such a possibility of suspending weekly rest (Article L3132-5 of the Labor Code) states that weekly rest can be suspended “no more than twice a month.”

During the Olympic Games, several sectors will experience sustained and continuous activity, especially the media.

Thus, the Olympic Games will take up almost all the airtime on France 2 and France 3, leaving space only for news and religious programs on Sunday morning.

The Olympic Organizing Committee recently estimated that the decree would affect several thousand people.
