In Brazil, Airbus is forced to land with one less wheel

The pilot showed excellent control, but passengers on the LATAM Airlines Airbus A319 were likely to shake a little during landing.

The Airbus aircraft, registered PT-TMO, took off from Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro to Congonhas Airport (CGH) in Sao Paulo at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, making a quick flight of about an hour.

During the landing approach, the crew, while extending the landing gear, had doubts that a serious problem might arise: the inner main landing gear wheel on the left would be missing.

The crew and authorities decided to redirect the flight to Guarulhos International Airport, also located in Sao Paulo.

The idea is to be able to visually inspect the landing gear while flying over the runway at low altitude. According to Brazilian website Aeroin, air traffic control and the runway safety team immediately confirmed that all the landing gear was correctly extended, but that a wheel was indeed missing.

The runway safety device was quickly activated, but thanks to the pilot’s control the Airbus landed safely.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of this rather rare incident, as the missing wheel was subsequently found near Santos Dumont Airport.
