Cosmetics brand The Body Shop is in receivership in the UK.

It is a global cosmetics giant in decline. British beauty chain The Body Shop went into receivership in the UK on Tuesday, February 13, the brand said in a press release. “The directors of Body Shop International Limited have appointed” consultancy firm FRP to manage the turnaround and restructuring of the company’s UK operations to “revitalize this iconic brand”, the press release said.

This procedure puts at risk about 2,000 jobs in the country and almost 200 stores. However, this only applies to the United Kingdom and not the rest of the brand’s global network, known for its early commitments to recycling or no animal testing. Therefore, French stores should not suffer the consequences of this measure.

The brand is represented in 89 countries.

The brand was founded in 1976 by Anita Roddick in Brighton, a seaside resort in southeast England. She opened her own store, and then began to develop activities in other British cities, and then in 89 countries around the world. The Body Shop sells natural-ingredient bath and body products, skin and hair care products, fragrances and cosmetics.

The company was sold at the end of 2023 by its former Brazilian owner Natura Cosmeticos to the German investment fund Aurelius for approximately 245 million euros. The deal is worth significantly less than the 1 billion euros the Brazilian paid to buy the group from French giant L’Oréal in 2017.
