Farmers’ income: new Egalim law, but for what purpose?

Will there soon be as many Egalim laws as there are episodes of the Star Wars saga? This Wednesday, February 21, among the responses to the demands of the agricultural world, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced the presentation before the summer of the parliament of a new, fifth version of the Egalim law, an acronym designed to bring about a “Balance of commercial relations in the agricultural sector and healthy and sustainable nutrition” . This text, first adopted in October 2018, had the main goal of securing the income of farmers, who are often mistreated during price negotiations for their products with the two giants of the agri-food industry and mass distribution.

Since then, the text has passed through parliament three times for revision. “In 2021, Egalim 2 was adopted, which tightened restrictions by making written contracts mandatory for the sale of agricultural products,” lists Anne-Catherine Loisier, Senator (Union of Centers) from Côte d’Or, co-rapporteur of the text. The so-called Decrozaille law, also called Egalim 3, in March 2023, which in particular concerns circumvention of the law by opening purchasing centers abroad.
