Bitcoin: Australian Craig Wright is not the creator of the famous cryptocurrency after all, according to judge

The evidence is “staggering.” A British judge ruled on Thursday that Australian Craig Wright, who claimed ownership of Bitcoin, was not its creator following a trial over his membership of an industry association. “I have concluded that the evidence is overwhelming” to state that “Dr. Wright is neither the person who created the Bitcoin system” nor “the author of the original versions of the Bitcoin software,” Judge James Mellor declared the trial closed, explaining that he will lay out his arguments in detail in his upcoming verdict.

The 53-year-old computer scientist and entrepreneur “is not the author White paper Bitcoin,” a text detailing the underlying principles of the cryptocurrency, as well as who “operated under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto (the mysterious developer known as the father of Bitcoin, editor’s note) between 2008 and 2011,” the judge also confirmed .

Charges of “perjury”

For almost a month and a half, the UK High Court considered the claims of a man whom his detractors nicknamed “Faketoshi” (from “false Satoshi”), who claimed copyright to this fundamental “white paper”, as well as to the code of this cryptocurrency. “Dr. Wright has failed to produce a single verifiable and reliable document to support” his claims, Jonathan Hough, a lawyer for the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (Copa), an association that aims to eliminate patents on technology related to cryptocurrencies. Copa brings together such heavyweights as exchange platform Coinbase and digital payments company Block.

Computer experts on both sides, in particular, have concluded that the source file of Bitcoin’s founding text was in fact created in OpenOffice software, and not using the LaTex document composition system, as Craig Wright suggests.

Defense lawyer Anthony Grabiner, for his part, argued that his client had the legal, monetary and information technology skills necessary to invent Bitcoin. During her testimony, Craig Wright’s sister praised her attraction to Japanese culture.

” Lie “

Copa will “request, following a ruling,” that British prosecutors pursue criminal charges for “perjury and obstruction of justice,” the association explained in its closing arguments. Judge Mellor did not say when he would release his written decision.

The outcome of this case will determine the outcome of another case in which Craig Wright will face 26 developers, individuals, as well as companies such as the Coinbase platform, which he accuses of violating his intellectual property rights. “This decision is a victory” because it puts an end to the “lies” that Craig Wright has used to “harass and intimidate developers in the Bitcoin community” for eight years, a Copa spokesman said.

“Satoshi understood the value of decentralization and built Bitcoin in such a way that it could not be controlled by one person or entity,” responded a representative of the Copa member platform Kraken, which was the subject of Craig’s lawsuit. Wright.
