Boeing: Texas prosecutors open investigation into subcontractor

The disappointments of the American carrier continue. The Texas Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into Spirit AeroSystems, a subcontractor of US aircraft manufacturer Boeing, which found “repeated problems with certain parts,” according to a press release.

Spirit AeroSystems makes fuselages and other major structural parts for aircraft, including the flagship Boeing 737. “Apparent manufacturing defects have resulted in numerous disturbing or dangerous incidents” on 737 models, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton detailed in a press release Thursday.

Recurring problems

Boeing came close to disaster in early January when a door cover came off mid-flight on an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9, fortunately resulting in only a few minor injuries.

Several investigations were launched which revealed recurring problems of “non-compliance”. Justice is now asking Spirit AeroSystems to provide “documents relevant to the elimination of defects in its products,” and in addition to quality control, the investigation is also interested in the way it is organized and managed.

Passenger safety is in question

The investigation comes just days after Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun announced he would leave at the end of the year.

“I will hold accountable any company that fails to meet the required legal standards, and will do everything in my power to ensure that manufacturers take passenger safety seriously,” prosecutor Ken Paxton said in a press release.

US giant Boeing, which was already struggling to recover from two crashes in 2018 and 2019, is in turmoil after a string of problems with the quality and safety of its planes lasting more than a year.
