Amazon Prime Video: advertising comes to France, you have to pay to get rid of it

Your favorite ad-free program is over! As announced in late February, French users of Amazon Prime Video will see advertising on its streaming platform on Tuesday.

Regarding the duration of the advertisements, about thirty seconds should pass before you can view the selected program. Thus, advertising time should be between two and three minutes per hour of viewing, as has happened in the United States since January 29, our colleagues from Télérama note.

This measure can be bypassed by paying an additional 1.99 euros per month, as evidenced by the message from Amazon visible when connecting to the platform. You need to go to settings, select “Prime”, then “Watch without ads” and finally click “Start subscription”.

Amazon is following in the footsteps of its competitors

The classic subscription with ads interspersing programs still costs €6.99 per month and €69.90 per year. Therefore, if you want to remove ads, you will have to pay 8.98 euros per month or 93.78 euros per year. However, even if you have an ad-free subscription, live streams will still include ads.

Amazon justified this decision, which has already been applied for months in other countries such as the US, UK or Germany, by the need to “continue to invest in compelling content”, promising to broadcast “significantly fewer advertisements than traditional linear TV and other streaming services.”

With this development, Amazon fits into the pattern of its competitors: Netflix entered hostilities in November 2022, followed by Disney+ a year later. Except that Amazon’s offering is much cheaper than other platforms. So, to avoid ads, you’ll have to pay an extra €3 on Disney+ and €7.50 on Netflix.

A gigantic market is opening up for the American firm and its boss Jeff Bezos. Thanks to its online sales site, Amazon knows exactly the preferences of its customers. And therefore can broadcast “targeted” advertising, which is likely to be sold at a very high price. In 2016, Jeff Bezos said during a conference: “When we win the Golden Globes, it will help us sell more shoes. »
